US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi confirmed that the House will vote early this week on a draft resolution urging Vice President Mike Pence to take over the reins of power from President Donald Trump.
Pelosi said today, Sunday, in a letter to Democratic lawmakers seen by RT, that the leader of the Democratic majority in the House of Representatives, Steny Hoyer, will ask for unanimous approval on Monday to put forward the draft resolution prepared by Representative Jamie Raskin.
She explained that this legislation urges Pence to hold a cabinet meeting and to proceed with the activation of the 25th amendment, which provides for the reins of government to be handed over to the Vice President in circumstances including the death of the head of state or the loss of the ability to perform the duties of the presidency.
Pelosi said that if it is not approved unanimously, the legislation will be put to vote the next day (Tuesday), adding that he will ask Pence to respond to this call within 24 hours, and after this period expires, impeachment measures against Trump will be launched in the House of Representatives.
“In order to protect our constitution and our democracy, we must act urgently because this president poses an imminent threat to both of them. As the days go by, the horror of this president’s continuous attack on our democracy has escalated, and there is an urgent need to act.”
This movement of the Democratic Party came against the background of the killing of 5 people, including a policeman, in the storming of the Capitol building last Wednesday by hundreds of Trump supporters in an attempt to prevent lawmakers to confirm the victory of Democrat Joe Biden in the presidential elections.
