Josh Shapiro vs. Doug Mastriano: The Pennsylvania Gubernatorial Race
The gubernatorial race pitted Democrat Josh Shapiro against Republican Doug Mastriano.
Shapiro, the state attorney general, is trying to maintain Democratic control of the governorship in a race that has become more important because the governor appoints the official responsible for elections.
Shapiro’s opponent is Republican state Sen. Doug Mastriano, who was a central figure supporting former President Donald Trump’s efforts to nullify the 2020 election.
The results of the congressional elections
Joe Biden brought Pennsylvania back for the Democrats in 2020. Trump narrowly won the state in 2016, but before that, the state had voted Democrat in six straight presidential elections.
Republicans hope to keep an open Senate seat with former TV personality Mehmet Oz, while Lt. Gov. John Fetterman hopes his nontraditional appeal can help him pass the seat to Democrats.
The Democratic base in Pennsylvania resides in the urban areas of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, while the Republicans prevail in the more rural central part of the state. Philadelphia suburbs have leaned Democratic, while Republicans have gained ground in the western and northeastern parts of the state.
