Personal crises can affect the business: How to deal with them?

Who has not had a crisis in their life? Who has not felt that the floor is sinking under their feet in the face of an adverse situation? Asks Hugo Cuestas, CEO of Cuesta Campo Abogados, and says that few things in life are certain, but one of them is the crisis. Knowing how to face them is key for the business to prosper.

There are different types of crises: couple, existential and businessbut the problem is that they usually take us by surprise and if we are not prepared they can affect the company.

“If you don’t make good decisions, the crisis sinks you, but if they are good decisions, the crisis sublimates you, strengthens your person and the organization,” Cuestas points out in his book What is life about? Find your answers.

In a conversation with El Economista, Cuestas narrates that in his experience as a corporate lawyer, he has realized that businessmen tend to worry more about financial statements and the company’s mission, vision and values, which due to their physical and emotional health, which can affect businesses and prevent them from correctly facing crises.

A study carried out by Endeavor highlights that three out of four entrepreneurs work more than 50 hours a week and 20% more than 70 hours, and long hours increase the anxiety, fatigue and depression.

“If people are not well, they cannot contribute the best of themselves, nor the value that the company expects from them,” Cuestas points out.

For this reason, it is essential to be well in the six areas that make up life: personal, family, business, social, economic and spiritual.

“If you have a family problem, if you are going through the death of a loved one, a serious accident or a divorce, where is your concentration and talent? Surely you are not in the objectives of the company. You are in a survival stage and until you resolve it, it will be very difficult for you to contribute the added value of your talent”.

A study carried out by PWC indicates that six out of 10 companies have faced a crisis in the last five years, which has as a consequence negative impacts on business relationships, reputation, the workforce and legal problems.

Cuestas says that many times businessmen do not pay attention to their own well-being because they are involved in the company numbersTherefore, he recommends doing a thorough introspection of themselves to generate that self-knowledge and know what their own virtues, dreams and fears are.

Lastly, the specialist points out that getting out of crises depends not only on strength, but also on resilience and being human.

“Crises make us less arrogant and allow us to recognize ourselves vulnerable. Crises favor empathy and allow us to connect with what is fragile in all of us. Managed well, they make us more empathetic, and this is a necessary step for real growth”.
