Philippine authorities decided to fire a police chief after announcing that a flight attendant had been gang-raped and murdered, even though her family insists he was telling the truth.
Host Christine Dasera was found dead in a bathtub inside the Garden City Grand Hotel, Makati in Metropolitan Manila, the Philippines, on New Year’s Day.
At least 11 men were accused of raping and then killing the 23-year-old flight attendant, who worked as part of the airline, “PAL Express”, after police investigations revealed that she had injuries to her arms and legs and traces of sperm on her body.
But prosecutors later dropped the charges, and said further investigations, including an autopsy, had revealed the death of hostess Dassira, due to a brain aneurysm.
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported that an order has been issued to dismiss Makati Police Chief, Colonel Harold Depositar, in light of severe criticism for dealing with this high-profile case.
The host’s mother refused as a result of the autopsy, insisting that her daughter had been raped and killed, and that her killers should be held accountable.
A colleague of the late hostess, Rommel Galida, who was later arrested as a suspect, recounted how he woke up in the morning and noticed her sleeping in the bathtub.
He said he covered her with a blanket before returning to sleep, only finding out she was very ill when he woke up later and sounded the alarm.
The police initially claimed it was a case of gang rape, and it was reported worldwide, but now backed down after admitting that they had made this claim without an autopsy.
It was later revealed that all the men accused in the case said they were homosexual.
