The Dutch manufacturer of medical devices Philips announced this Monday a cut of 6,000 jobs around the world, in addition to the abolition of 4,000 jobs decided last October.
This announcement is due to new losses caused by a mass recall of sleep respirators with manufacturing defects.
This “difficult but necessary reduction of our workforce” will take place from now to the year 2025announced in a statement the executive director of Philips Roy Jakobs.
2022 “has been a very difficult year for Philips and our shareholders and we are taking strong steps to improve our efficiency and increase performance urgently,” Jakobs said.
The Amsterdam-based firm announced net losses of 105 million euros (114 million dollars) in the fourth quarter of 2022 and 1,605 million euros in the whole of last year, largely due to the withdrawal of respirators.
In 2021, Philips announced a worldwide recall of its devices to treat people with sleep apnea.
Philips made the drastic decision because patients risked “potential toxic and carcinogenic effects” if they inhaled or swallowed pieces of degraded sound-absorbing foam from the devices.
