Among the waves of executive orders he signed on his first day back in office, President Trump issued pardons for every person charged or convicted over the January 6 riot at the US Capitol.
While Trump had long labelled the rioters “political prisoners” and had praised them for opposing his 2020 election loss, many people — including his vice-president JD Vance — had expected the most violent offenders to remain behind bars.
Those offenders included people who had been documented assaulting police officers guarding the Capitol, which the rioters stormed to try to prevent politicians certifying Joe Biden’s election win. Five deaths were linked to the unrest.
