At a press conference, the president of the Council for Sustainable Development (Codes) of SonoraFrancisco Acuña Méndez, explained that the United States government currently has a plan to detonate the production of semiconductors in Arizona, precisely as a Sonoran entity they intend to link up, taking advantage of the detonation of lithium.

He specified that precisely during the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP27) the Sonora plan has been presented as a growth opportunity for the border between Mexico and the American Union.

Much attention has been drawn to the fact that it is not just generating energy, it is not just putting up panels and generating energy that is important, but it goes much further (…) The border region is linking energy with infrastructure, for electromobility and semiconductors and above all the Mexican talent, the engineers from Sonora”, he explained.

According to the United States ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, the cooperation work that is taking place with Sonora aims to make this part of the border a leader in green energy generation.

“What we are seeing here in Sonora and Arizona is an example of a team that is working, I believe this has never happened (…) Now, in 2022 we are doing it in the fight against climate change, raising the technologies of the future, making a joint plan between the United States and Mexico, which had never happened”, he commented.

For his part, the Secretary of Infrastructure and Urban Development of SonoraHeriberto Aguilar Castillo, announced that as part of this plan he started the modernization of the six border crossings in the state, for which there is a budget of four 4,494 million pesos, directly benefiting almost 3 million people.

“We had a very important binational organization meeting that allows us to make customs modernization projects in Sonora more efficient and even in time and form. In our master plan we are starting from the fact that we are going for a modernization of customs that reduces the waiting time for goods and passengers to enter. In this way, with these actions, we are going to make commercial exchange more efficient, but also have spaces worthy of border crossings in Sonora”, he specified.

Investments

During the supervision of the border port of San Luis Río Colorado, the governor, Alfonso Durazo Montaño, explained that this infrastructure improvement, in addition to taking place within the framework of the Sonora project, aims to make binational commercial exchange more efficient.

In addition, it is intended that both Sonora and Arizona be more attractive in terms of investments, taking advantage of the global geopolitical context where companies and capital are relocating.

“It is a phenomenon with which the state will benefit from having a solid industry and trained human capital recognized worldwide. My appreciation for the extraordinary coordination between our government and the United States government to modernize the border ports,” he said.
