A demo for Pokémon Legends: Z-A featured at the Pokémon World Championships has confirmed a new questline centered on the Legendary Pokémon Zygarde. Following a similar mechanic from Pokémon Legends: Arceus, players will be tasked with tracking the popular Pokémon across the game’s map.
While Zygarde’s presence was hinted at in early trailers, new details emerged from a preview of the game’s demo. According to an official description from Nintendo, the demo includes a quest where players pursue Zygarde through the streets of Lumiose City.
The demo’s description reads: “Experience the new real-time battling system in a series of Trainer battles that take place after hours in Lumiose City. Chase Zygarde through the streets of Lumiose City, and team up with Lucario to take on Rogue Mega Absol in an epic, action-packed showdown!”
This reveal has fueled speculation that the game will feature a major storyline reminiscent of a popular quest from Pokémon Legends: Arceus. In that title, players had to collect 108 Spiritomb Wisps scattered across the entire Hisui region to encounter the Ghost-type Pokémon.
It is now thought that Pokémon Legends: Z-A will introduce a similar mission where players must find a specific number of Zygarde Cells hidden throughout Lumiose City. In Pokémon lore, collecting these cells allows Zygarde to transform from its initial 10% “dog” Forme into its more powerful 50% and Complete Formes.
This theory is supported by previous trailers, which have shown small Zygarde Cells in hard-to-reach locations, such as perched on a rooftop.
A large-scale collection quest would align with the design philosophy of the Legends sub-series. Pokémon Legends: Arceus heavily remixed story elements and quests from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. If this trend continues, Pokémon Legends: Z-A is expected to be a reimagining of storylines from Pokémon X and Y, where the Zygarde Cell quest was first introduced. At a minimum, the latest demo confirms that pursuing the Legendary Pokémon will be a key feature of the upcoming title.
