Only 16% of Americans expressed confidence that the principles of democracy work well in their country, according to the results of a poll conducted by the “Associated Press” with the participation of the National Center for Opinion Studies at the University of Chicago.
According to the poll, about half of Americans (45%) believed that these principles do not function properly, while 38% believe that democracy only partially works well.
As for the distribution of opinions according to the party scale, the percentage of Republican supporters who believe that the principles of democracy are working partially well collapsed from 68% in October 2020 to 36% last January, while the opinions of supporters of the Democratic Party witnessed an opposite change: from 37% to 70 %.
The results of the poll, which were conducted from December 28, 2020 to February 1, showed that 70% of Americans consider the current President Joe Biden a person who respects democratic institutions, while 62% of the respondents considered that former President Donald Trump’s respect for democracy was little or no.
