Pope Francis appoints a provisional administrator of Caritas due to poor management

The Pope Francisco appointed this Tuesday a provisional administrator in charge of Charity International (CI) after discovering “weaknesses in the management procedures” of this network of charitable organizations based in the Vatican.

The management of Caritas Internationalis is placed under provisional administration to improve its management rules and procedures,” the Vatican said.

The unexpected announcement came “after examination of his activities by an independent commission” created by the Vatican, which clarified that there are no indications of “mismanagement or inappropriate sexual conduct.”

According to the Vatican “weaknesses were observed in the management procedures” that need “urgent attention”.

The pope appointed a “consultor”, Pier Francesco Pinelliwhose performances begin on Tuesday and who will be assisted by Maria Amparo Alonso Escobar.

“Pier Francesco Pinelli and María Amparo Alonso Escobar will manage CI to provide stability and empathic leadership“added the Vatican.

According to the Holy See, Pinelli, who was trained as a Jesuit, has “strong leadership and management experience in various sectors” in energy companies such as ERG.

Caritas Internationalis, headquartered in the Vatican, is a confederation of 162 Catholic charities operating in more than 200 countries and territories around the world.

The new management team will remain in office until the next CI general assembly in May 2023, in which “the election of the president, the general secretary and the treasurer will take place.”
