On Sunday, Pope Francis presided over the Divine Liturgy at the Franso Hariri Stadium in Erbil, in front of nearly ten thousand people on the last day of his visit to Iraq.
And the Pope said: “Today I can see and feel that the Church in Iraq is alive and that Christ lives and works in this holy and believing people.” And he added, “Even in the midst of extreme poverty and difficulties, many of you generously offered tangible assistance and solidarity with the poor and suffering.”
The Pope’s historic visit to Iraq comes as part of an initiative to preserve the ancient Christian communities in Iraq, and to support the return of those Christians who were expelled by ISIS from their homes.
