(Trends Wide Spanish) — The three men who personify the Three Wise Men of Puerto Rico were part of this Wednesday the general audience held by Pope Francis in Vatican City.
According to a press release issued by the organization Los Reyes Magos de Juana Díaz, “once the ceremony was over, the pope came down to greet a group of guests, among whom were the ambassadors of the Catholic Church of Puerto Rico. Upon leaving the meeting, Gaspar, Melchor and Baltasar gave their impressions to the Supreme Pontiff in which a group of pilgrims who accompanied them participated.
It was reported that they asked Pope Francis to include Puerto Rico in his agenda of visits and to name a person for the position of cardinal for the local Catholic Church. According to the statement, once the hearing was over, the men “visited San Pedro Square where for two hours they were sharing with countless people and families who took pictures with them.”
The Three Wise Men will arrive in Puerto Rico on December 30, but before that they will be visiting Madrid, Spain, in the parish of San Esteban Protomártir.
The municipality of Juana Díaz, located in the south of the island, holds the traditional Three Kings Festival every January 6, where three men personify the figures of Gaspar, Melchor and Baltazar. The holiday originated in 1884.
Over the past few years, they have been to the Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, the United States, Venezuela, Mexico, Italy and Spain. In 2004, they participated in a personal audience with then-Pope John Paul II in Vatican City.
