On Friday, the Portuguese parliament approved a bill that would allow people with terminal illnesses to resort to doctors by requesting “euthanasia”.
The new legislation allows citizens and residents of the country over the age of 18 and those with incurable diseases and suffering from “permanent and unbearable pain” to ask doctors to help them in the paradox of life to alleviate their suffering.
It requires citizens seeking “euthanasia” to confirm their mental capacity to make such a decision.
After the parliament adopted the law, it was referred to President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who had previously pledged to respect the opinion of lawmakers on the issue that is still a subject of debate in the country.
After the law comes into force, Portugal will become the seventh country in the world to approve “euthanasia”.
