Boston Red Sox prospect Jhostynxon Garcia was named the International League’s Player of the Week on Monday following a torrid stretch at the plate for Triple-A Worcester.
Garcia earned the honor after hitting four home runs last week, part of a current streak where he has homered in three consecutive games. Over his last six contests, Garcia went 10-for-29 with four doubles and 13 RBIs. His recent performance has extended a longer hot streak, as the outfielder has now recorded a hit in 16 of his last 18 games.
His dominant start to August has boosted his Triple-A batting line to .305/.375/.587. Garcia, nicknamed “The Password” for his unique first name, is seeing his stock rise significantly during an impressive campaign. He recently entered MLB Pipeline’s top 100 list as the No. 88 prospect overall. He is now ranked second in Boston’s farm system behind shortstop Franklin Arias, following the graduation of Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony, and Kristian Campbell from prospect eligibility.
Across 33 games in Double-A and his current stint in Triple-A, Garcia is batting .288/.368/.518 with 18 home runs this season. Among International League hitters with a higher OPS, only top catching prospect Samuel Basallo is younger.
Despite his success, Garcia’s path to the majors appears blocked by a crowded Red Sox outfield. While the right-handed hitter could provide a platoon option against the left-handed Jarren Duran, Roman Anthony, and Wilyer Abreu, the organization is expected to keep the rising slugger in the minor leagues for the foreseeable future to ensure he receives consistent playing time.
