A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck the South Atlantic Ocean on Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey.
The tremor, which occurred at 4:29 p.m. Eastern Time, initially triggered tsunami alerts along the coast of Chile. However, authorities rescinded the warnings just over an hour later, deeming a tsunami threat unlikely.
The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Centers confirmed there was no tsunami danger for the East and West coasts of the United States and Canada, nor for Hawaii.
The USGS noted that the earthquake’s reported magnitude is preliminary and may be revised as seismologists continue to analyze the available data.
