Presidency of COP27 launches “adaptation agenda” to reduce environmental impact in the next 8 years

The president of COP27, Sameh Shoukrypresented the first comprehensive global plan -which was prepared with top-level representatives- that contains the “30 Adaptation Results” that meets urgent objectives for 2030, since research warns that almost half of the world’s population will be at serious risk of the impacts of climate change in the next 8 years.

In that sense, the plan seeks to: Make the transition to a sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture that can increase yields by 17% and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. greenhouse gases (GHG) at the farm level by 21%, without expanding agricultural frontiers while improving livelihoods, including those of small farmers.

Protect and restore approximately 400 million hectares in critical areas (terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems) by supporting indigenous and local communities using nature-based solutions to improve water security and livelihoods and transform 2 , 000 million hectares of land under sustainable management.

Protect 3 billion people by installing smart and early warning systems; as well as investing 4,000 million dollars to ensure the future of 15 million hectares of mangroves through collective action to halt loss, restore, double protection and ensure sustainable financing for all existing mangroves.

The plan that is born in the Climate Summit COP27 seeks to expand access to clean cooking for 2.4 billion people through at least $10 billion a year in innovative financing.

Mobilize $140-300 billion from public and private sources for adaptation and resilience and encourage 2,000 of the world’s largest companies to integrate physical climate risk and develop actionable adaptation plans.

In recognition of the importance of the global adaptation process, the Adaptation Agenda, the Presidency of COP27 took the lead in its presentation with the support of the UN Climate Change Secretariat, and backed by the more than 2,000 organizations spanning 131 countries in the campaign Race to Resilience.

At today’s launch, COP 27 President Sameh Shoukry called on all state and non-state actors to support this critical agenda.

Sameh Shoukry, who is also Egypt’s Foreign Minister, said that “The Sharm El-Sheikh Adaptation Agenda is a fundamental step in COP27, the implementation COP. The COP Presidency has long articulated our commitment to bring state and non-state actors together to advance the adaptation and resilience of the 4 billion people living in the most climate-vulnerable regions by 2030.”

He stated that they are determined “to develop a governance agreement that ensures continuity. in scope, priorities and reporting, while increasing action on the ground that accelerates system interventions and identified adaptation and resilience outcome targets.”

He argued that it is necessary to mobilize between 140,000 and 300,000 million dollars, through public and private sources annually with a minimum objective of 50% for adaptation, as requested by the Secretary General of the United Nations, Anthony Guterres.

He also stressed that it is worrying that in Africa, the private financial participation in the total financing of climate adaptation efforts “does not exceed 3% and seven times that amount will be needed annually until 2030.”

As the growing number of climate emergencies around the world clearly shows, a focus on adaptation is a crucial and pressing need.”
