Deputy Speaker of the Russian State Duma, Piotr Tolstoy, said that Hendrik Dams, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, promised to take immediate measures if the rights of Russian-speaking journalists were violated in Latvia.
Hendrik Dams also promised to remind the Latvian government of the commitments it “made upon itself when joining the Council of Europe.”
The Russian parliamentarian added, “During the meeting with Dams, I handed him a letter from the Russian Journalists Syndicate. Dams promised to inform the Commission for Human Rights and the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Council of Europe Dengi Mijatovic about this, and thus take all immediate and necessary measures, to remind the Latvian government of the commitments it has undertaken through Joining the Council of Europe. “
Tolstoy indicated that during the meeting that took place on Monday, the issue of protecting Russians and Russian-speaking people in the Baltic states was discussed.
It is noteworthy that Hendrik Dams is on a working visit to Moscow between 15 and 16 March.
