Meta Platforms said on Tuesday that it will block more content that teens can watch on… Facebook AndInstagramThis came after pressure on the company from regulatory authorities around the world to limit content that could be harmful, according to a Reuters report.
The company said that it will impose on teenagers the strictest restrictions on controlling content in these applications, and will also restrict additional search terms in the Instagram photo application. She added that this step will make it difficult for teenagers to access sensitive content such as suicide, self-harm, and eating disorders when they use features on Instagram, including “Search” and “Explore.”
The company stated that the protection measures scheduled to be implemented in the coming weeks will help display content appropriate to the “age group.”
Meta is under pressure in the United States and Europe due to allegations that its applications are addictive and that they have played a role in exacerbating the mental health crisis among young people.
In October, prosecutors filed lawsuits against the company in 33 US states, including California and New York, saying it repeatedly misled users about the risks of its platforms.
In Europe, the European Commission has requested information on the measures Meta is taking to protect children from illegal and harmful content.
Regulatory pressure came after testimony by a former Meta employee before the US Senate in which he accused the company of being aware of the harassment and other harm faced by teenagers on its platforms, but failing to take measures against these problems.
