Sony launched the PlayStation VR2 on February 22 with direct orders from the PlayStation Store, but now the virtual reality headset is available at other major retailers, like Amazon, Best Buy, and GameStop for $550.
PlayStation VR2 requires a PS5 to play, and it needs a wired USB-C connection while in use. The virtual reality headset comes with two wireless PS VR2 Sense controllers and a pair of headphones.
The PS VR2 is a pricey addition to a console that already costs up to $500 on its own, but it does boast some of the most impressive specs we’ve seen for a VR headset. To help you decide whether the PS VR2 is a good fit for your needs, we broke down all of the device’s key features and games, along with details on how to buy it.
The PS VR2 is a new virtual reality headset built for the PS5. You can buy it now for $550 from major retailers like Amazon and Best Buy. The device requires a PS5 to use.
How to buy PS VR2
At launch, you could only buy a PS VR2 online from the PlayStation store, but as of May 2023, the PS VR2 headset is now available at other retailers, including Amazon, Best Buy, and GameStop.
The PlayStation VR2 base package costs $550 and includes the headset, two wireless PS VR2 sense controllers, and a pair of headphones. A PS VR2 bundle with a voucher code to redeem a digital copy of Horizon: Call of the Mountain is available for $600. A charging station for the PSVR2 Sense controllers is also sold separately for $50.
PS VR2 features
The PlayStation VR2 carries over many features found on the original PS VR model released in 2016, while offering a few key upgrades and new options.
Like the original headset, the VR2 must be wired to a console for use (in this case, the PS5). But while the original PlayStation VR required an external camera for motion detection, the PS VR2 has its own built-in motion and eye tracking.
PS VR2 also provides a “see-through view” to let players check their surroundings without taking off the headset, and players can set the boundaries for their play area using the headset’s cameras.
Visuals on PS VR2 benefit from a higher resolution OLED display that supports 4K and high dynamic range (HDR) contrast. The display operates with a 90Hz or 120Hz refresh rate for a smooth picture.
PS VR2 supports PlayStation’s 3D audio technology for spatial sound, and the headset features a built-in mic and a headphone port.
The PS VR2 Sense controllers have adaptive triggers with adjustable sensitivity and haptic feedback, just like the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller. The headset also has its own haptic feedback.
PS VR2 specs at a glance
How does the PS VR2 price compare to competing VR headsets?
At $550, the PS VR2 actually costs more than the PS5 console itself, and it’s significantly more expensive than the $400 Meta Quest 2, the most popular VR headset currently on the market. The Quest 2 also works as a standalone device, while the PS VR2 requires a PS5 to work, which costs an extra $400-$500.
Meta does offer a more expensive $1,500 headset, the Meta Quest Pro, but it’s being marketed as a device for working professionals rather than a gaming platform. That said, other VR headset competitors designed to pair with PCs cost way more than PS VR2, like the $1,500 Valve Index and the $750 Vive Cosmos Elite, both of which require external sensors that PS VR2 doesn’t need.
While it’s expensive, PS VR2 is designed to deliver some of the best performance available in the VR space, as well as several PlayStation-exclusive titles built for VR.
