Princess Mary of Denmark has returned home to Australia with her husband, Prince Frederik of Denmark, and their children – Christian, 17, Isabella, 15, and twins Vincent and Josephine, 11 – for the first time in five years.Â
And on Wednesday, the stylish royal embraced her Aussie roots by hitting the surf at Sydney’s Palm Beach for a refreshing dip with friends and loved ones.Â
Mary, 50, cut a casual figure on the day, arriving at the beach in a classic white shirt and green shorts.Â

She wore her hair pulled back off her face for the occasion, and appeared to have on minimal makeup, as she carried an orange tote.Â
It wasn’t long before Mary decided to throw caution to the wind and rock jump into the inviting sea at the picturesque locale north of the city’s central business district.
The future Queen of Denmark barely skipped a beat as she made her way up a precipice surrounded by friends.Â
She then approached the rocky edge without hesitation and gleefully pin-dropped into the sea below.Â

Her last time travelling to her home country in an official capacity was in 2013.
A statement from the royal household read: ‘In December, the Crown Prince’s family will travel on a private Christmas holiday in Australia to celebrate the holiday with HRH the Crown Princess’s family.

‘It has been five years since the Crown Prince coupled together with their four children last visited the Crown Princess’s homeland.’
Since marrying her prince in 2004, Mary’s known to have come back to Australia at least nine times – with four being official visits.
Before the pandemic, the family would make a visit back at least every one or two years, but this slowed after 2017.Â

In March 2021, the royal made a secret trip without her husband or children for her 50th birthday.
Mary met up with pals who weren’t able to make it to Denmark for the celebrations, and was spotted shopping in the Melbourne suburb of Brighton with her former bridesmaid Amber Petty.Â
She picked up a coral suit from a local brand Scanlan Theodore and was pictured wearing it weeks later back home in Denmark.Â

The last time Mary visited with her family was December 2017, where she was pictured on many of Sydney’s beaches before travelling down to Tasmania to spend the holidays with her family.
This trip is likely to be a welcome distraction for Mary and Frederik, who have been plagued with drama in the royal household.
Mary’s mother-in-law Queen Margrethe, 82, and her youngest son Joachim have been engaged in peace talks after the monarch announced she would be stripping his four children, Prince Nikolai, 23, Prince Felix, 20, Prince Henrik, 13, and Princess Athena, 10, of their royal titles, which he claimed had ‘hurt’ them.Â

Heir to the throne Frederik and his wife Princess Mary’s four children remain unaffected by Margrethe’s decision.
Joachim, 53, and his second wife Princess Marie, 46, who is mother to his youngest two children, have said their relationship with Frederik and Mary is ‘complicated’.Â
Frederik recently spoke publicly for the first time since his mother, Queen Margrethe II, announced that she would be stripping the prince and princess titles from Prince Joachim’s four children.
‘It is sad to see how affected he has been by the decision,’ commented Frederik.
Since marrying her prince in 2004, Mary has returned to Australia at least nine times – with four being official visits
Speaking to Danish publication B.T. the father-of-four, denied his brother’s claims that they’re not speaking and insisted that they have been in ‘constant’ communication.
Prince Joachim and Princess Marie have, on the other hand, previously claimed that they have not spoken to the Crown Prince or his wife Princess Mary during the crisis.
Mary – born Mary Elizabeth Donaldson – is one of the most respected women on the international scene.Â
The love story between Princess Mary and Prince Frederik has been well documented; the couple met in a Sydney bar and Mary, born in Tasmania, moved to the northern hemisphere to be with Frederik.Â

She famously met her husband Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark by chance at Sydney pub the Slip Inn during the 2000 Olympics.
After their encounter, Fred – who was in Australia to support Denmark’s Olympic sailing team – asked Mary for her phone number and a romance blossomed.Â
‘The first time we met we shook hands. I didn’t know he was the prince of Denmark. Half an hour later someone came up to me and said, “Do you know who these people are”?’ Mary revealed in an interview about meeting the heir to the Danish throne.
They maintained a long-distance relationship for a year, with Frederik making secret trips Down Under before Mary moved to Denmark to study Danish language at Copenhagen’s Studieskolen in 2001.

In early 2003, Frederik’s mother Queen Margrethe publicly acknowledged the relationship and the couple announced their engagement at Amalienborg Castle later that year on October 8.Â
Frederik and Mary married on May 14, 2004 at Copenhagen Cathedral, with the newly minted Crown Princess opting for a beautiful gown by Danish designer Uffer Frank and a veil first used by Crown Princess Margaret of Sweden in 1905.
Their first child, Prince Christian Valdemar Henri John, was born October 15, 2005; Princess Isabella Henrietta Ingrid Margrethe followed on April 21, 2007.
Almost four years later Mary and Frederik welcomed twins, Princess Josephine Sophia Ivalo Mathilda and Prince Vincent Frederik Minik Alexander at the Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen on January 8, 2011.
