Private sector seeks to boost the Port of Lázaro Cárdenas with investments of more than 6,000 million pesos

With the aim of achieving that the Port of Lazaro CardenasMichoacán, becomes the Mexican port reference for nearshoring, the private sector together with the Administration of the National Port System (Asipona) announced the investment package that they are implementing, capital amounting to 6,856.55 million pesos.

Following a meeting called by the Mexican Association of Shipping Agents (Amanac), the general director of the Asipona of the port of Lázaro Cárdenas, Jorge Luis Cruz Ballado, detailed the investment package and precisely, the private sector is contributing an amount of 1,610.84 million pesos in terms of business, while the sector public, and only for the port infrastructure improvement part, a total of 677.43 million.

Also noteworthy is the investment being made by the Asipona for the Island of La Palma, with an amount of 3,900 million pesos, as well as public investment to improve the port and city relationship with 468.28 million; in addition to 200 million for the airport.

Among the new investment projects that are being designed and that seek to detonate the business of the port, is the construction of a yard for the handling of automotive cargo by Amports de México, operator of public yards. The investment for this project amounts to 108.66 million pesos in 12.67 hectares, with a static capacity of 7,560 units.

Another project that is contemplated is the expansion for the management of fluids in energy matters, in charge of Pacific Port Terminals, with an investment of 544.41 million pesos. In addition to ore movement, the facility will be able to operate energy fluids and build nine fluid storage tanks with a capacity of 401,280 barrels.

Also added is the expansion of the area for the management of fluids in energy matters, in charge of the company Pibsa, with a projected investment of 933.83 million pesos. The project includes two stages to operate hydrocarbons: the first phase covers 6.84 hectares for the construction of six storage tanks, with a capacity of 405,000 barrels; while the second stage covers 2.45 hectares for the adaptation of the pier to receive hydrocarbons.

Another investment project that was announced is the expansion of the storage capacity of vegetable oils by the AAK company, with an amount of 23.94 million pesos. Said project includes the expansion of the installed capacity, from 20,000 tons with 12 tanks, to 35,000 tons with 21 tanks, for the storage of non-petroleum fluids.

According to Cruz Ballado, these investments take place in a context where Lázaro Cárdenas is in fourth place at the national level with respect to the statistics of total port cargo, in the first three places are Manzanillo in Colima, as well as Veracruz and Coatzacoalcos in the state of Veracruz.

The types of cargo with the most movement in Lázaro Cárdenas are mineral bulk (44%), containerized cargo (35%), oil fluids (5%) and vehicles (3%).

In the national participation ranking, it is located in second place in the automotive cargo statistics, reaching a movement record of 646,578 units by 2022, which meant a growth of 40% compared to the previous year.

The president of Amanac, Norma Becerra Pocoroba, explained that in addition to presenting this cash cut, the meeting with Asipona was also held to seek to make the transit of cargo by rail more efficient through motor transport, as well as in the Lázaro Cárdenas terminals. .

For the shipping representative, these processes must be improved in a context where the port of Lázaro Cárdenas is taking on a greater role, this due to its strategic geographical position within the East, West, North and South maritime routes, as well as its extension of more than 820 hectares available for new businesses.

Cruz Ballado recalled that this Michoacán port has one of the largest drafts, with up to 19 meters in the access channel, it also receives ships of up to 165,000 tons and seventh-generation container ships.
