UphillSport Story
UphillSport is an innovative outdoor lifestyle brand from Tampere, Finland.
The Tampere area has over 200 years of quality textile manufacturing know-how. We have a long-term history and know-how for manufacturing high quality performance socks for cold and moist conditions. We had a desire to export our products outside of Finland and learn if our products would be successful in other parts of the world too. We understand that we have great quality socks for the Finnish subarctic climate and its people, so perhaps the socks would be suitable for worldwide. After realizing that a subarctic climate was in other parts of the world as well: however, on Uphills and on Higher Grounds, the UphillSport brand was born in 2014.
The UphillSport brand is founded on the innovations of the Multi-Layer System. By using our Multi-Layers System, we can make a warm sock, however thin in thickness. We understand different materials have unique properties and functions that can be beneficial with the Multi-layers structure. The main benefits are breathability, moisture control, durability, warmth, and anti-cut protection. UphillSport socks are ideal for active outdoor and performance sports people.
UphillSport is passionately committed to continue our technical innovations and further develop with our high-quality manufacturing know-how along with sustainable way.
More about our journey so far and beyond…
We have our own sock factory and have been producing socks since 1996. As we have our own staff and reasonably long traditions ourselves, we can re-assure the quality of our premium socks. We are NOT just a brand creating marketing content for our UphillSport brand and sourcing the socks from the orient. All our socks are manufactured in Finland and we control the quality of the whole process.
Our region has a very long textile industry history. The 1st sock factory was set up 1836 and was named “Stocking Manufacture Tammerfors”. We are part of the spirit of the Tampere Textile Industry, that has a long tradition of quality sock manufacturing. We aim to add to the tradition and make our own story known part of much larger textile culture we crew into. We are passionate about our history full of know-how and commitment to quality.
The industry has had to re-invent itself along the way during 200 years, as the global markets changed with cheaper production locations flooding basic product markets about 20+ years ago. We understand quality intimately, have great knowledge of materials, have almost 200 years of know-how and a passionate, professional work force. The regions’ key competitive opportunity is to further develop its know-how and specializations.
We have innovated unique Multi-Layer System; this allows us to separate different materials into separate layers so that different materials performance their specific characteristics task. The same way if you go out in the cold conditions you know how to layer clothing to stay warm in other parts of your body. We can do similar in a sock, the way we knit the yarns into different layers, to keep you warm. Multi-Layer System can make socks very durable. In our DuraTech socks we knit the more fragile natural fiber, like Merino Wool or Bamboo between 2 synthetic yarns. Socks will increase in durability. The outer layer synthetic yarn will last longer, thank natural fiber would.
In Finland, the temperature can drop down to minus 52 Celsius which equals to minus 61 Fahrenheit. That is evil cold even in Finnish standards, however assuming you need to go outside you need to focus on the materials and thermals grades of your socks. We publish all the yarn materials with %, product weights, thermal grades, shaft lengths, sock thickness and other key features of all our socks. We hope this will help you on your shopping experience finding the best socks for your activity. Finland is in the same latitude than USA-Alaska, Greenland, and Siberia-Russia. Big part of Finland is North from Arctic Circle! So, we understand extreme cold well. We understand the materials and their performance well. We have “Snow-How”. You may not come across this kind of extreme cold (lucky you), however if you like Alpine Skiing for example, we propose you check the yarn material when choosing product. Take it from us, Cotton material in ski-socks are not the warmest materials for spending a whole day at the slopes. Acrylic is even worst in thermal grades, however with these materials you get cheaper socks. If you are planning to stay in the Uphill’s or slopes longer, we propose to consider products with Merino Wool that has higher thermal value. Merino wool is very warm and comfortable to the skin. The yarn is breathable; wool dries fast and is naturally odor repellent. Merino Wool can absorb almost one-third of its own weight in water and still be warm. We mainly use a blend of 80% merino wool + 20% polyamide. This combination increases the durability of the socks, and socks still have a high wool percentage. All merino wool is Nativa certified. Nativa wool is Bluesigned and chlorine free. With Nativa Certified Merino Wool we can trace back the yarn transparently along the supply chain all the way to the farmer. We build long standing relationships with our supply chain of yarns and together we are championing of wool’s unparalleled unique properties. Please notice not all socks are with Merino.
UphillSport brand is focusing on premium technical quality performance products. Our future strategy is to focus helping our UphillSport customers to enjoy great outdoors more. We want performance sport people to enjoy their sports more as their feet are feeling the most comfortable, they have ever felt during sports activity.
