PT and PVEM save their registration with AMLO’s “Plan B” electoral reform

The “Plan B” of the electoral reform approved by the Chamber of Deputies included the figure of common candidacy, with which PT y PVEM guarantee not to lose registration.

In the reform to article 12 of the General Law of Electoral Institutions and Procedures it was included that political parties may nominate candidates under the figure of Common Candidacy. “In this case, the logo or emblem of the parties that decide to participate in this modality will appear in the same box of the electoral ballot. The parties must enter into an agreement for the distribution of the votes cast.

Erick Guerrero, a lawyer specializing in electoral issues, explained that currently in electoral matters at the federal level the form of political association is only through coalitions, while in the federal entities there is the possibility of going in common candidacies or in a party alliance, that have as objective the transfer of votes, “that is, in the agreement prior to the election of the total vote cast, the agreement of the common candidacy defines how much percentage of votes will correspond to each member party, this new law intends to incorporate that concept local to the federal level.

He gave as an example a coalition Morena-PT-PVEM that it could agree that, of the 1,000 votes obtained from its postulated candidate, Morena would receive 50% (500 votes), PT 30% (300 votes) and PVEM 20% (200 votes). This situation would allow the parties to guarantee the 3% minimum vote required to maintain the registry. “That will help PT and PVEM do not lose registration ”, he explained.
