Puebla, Pue. At least 38 businesses of the Poblana Association of Restaurants and Service Providers (Apresac) lowered the curtain due to low sales and could not return in 2022, which represented the loss of 250 jobs, the president reported Arturo Delgado Ramirez.
He explained that the owners of the closed businesses did not have the resources to reopen, because the banks were closed to giving them loans, considering them high risk to pay.
The leader explained that each establishment had three to six years in service; however, they couldn’t stand the conditions, first closing for five months (March to July 2020) and then having to sell takeout only for much of last year, which left them only 10% income.
He mentioned that the rest of the restaurants are beginning to have more activity, in the case of 60% of its 340 membersthese continue to have sales at 50% from Monday to Friday and on weekends they rise to 70%, but “it is insufficient when coming from a critical period in the economy.”
Delgado Ramírez indicated that the authorities have a perception that the sectors are recovering faster, which they do not share, because those who “go up to date” are the businessmen and that is reflected in the fact that some have debts that are increasing because they are paying according to their sales and at the same time investing to survive.
He commented that even when they ask the municipal and state authorities to promote Puebla, they do not support them, leaving entrepreneurs in the tourism sector alone, while in other entities there is support for economic reactivation.
On the other hand, Delgado Ramírez recognized that they are presenting a problem of high staff turnover this year, which is detrimental because they must be training new employees, who stay for a maximum of seven months and migrate.
He admitted that these movements are taking place due to the opening of new restaurants or those that are investing to expand require more personnel.
“Employees leave for 300 pesos more or where there is more opportunity for tips, which is understandable given the economic environment in Puebla and the country, but it is still detrimental to the restaurant sector,” he said.
