Puerto Vallarta recovers cruise tourism

Guadalajara, Jalisco. After being one of the sectors most affected by the pandemic, cruise tourism in Puerto Vallarta -the most important beach destination in Jalisco- will close 2022 with positive indicators, according to the director of Tourism Promotion of the Ministry of Tourism, Rocío. Lancaster-Jones.

Based on statistics from the Administration of the National Port System (ASIPONA) of Puerto Vallarta, from January to October a total of 109 cruise ships with 255,000 tourists arrived at that destination, a figure that represents a growth of 155% in relation to the 100,000 visitors that They arrived at the port by sea throughout 2021.

According to the expectations of the Jalisco Tourism Secretariat, by the end of this year an additional 51 cruise ships with 125,000 passengers are expected to arrive in Puerto Vallarta, so 2022 would close with the reception of 160 cruise ships with more than 380,000 passengers and a economic benefit of 500 million pesos for this destination in the Mexican Pacific.

Lancaster Jones indicated that the cruise segment is considered “a power” to generate tourism in Puerto Vallarta since there are 38 international cruise ships in this destination.

“Cruises are a great opportunity for visitors and tourists to have a unique tourist experience, since they are not only a means of transportation, but also meet entertainment and food needs,” said the official.

For Puerto Vallarta, the shipping industry represents 6% of the tourists who arrive at the destination and is the third largest recipient of tourism in the Pacific, only behind the ports of Ensenada and Cabo San Lucas in Baja California.
