Doha– Dividing a country Qatar A new path in the field of energy through the development of the Al-Idd Al-Sharqi oil field located east of the capital, Doha, with the aim of doubling its oil production in conjunction with the development North Field For natural gas.
The step to develop the Idd al-Sharqi oil field – which Qatar fully acquired in 2019 – reflects Doha’s commitment to enhancing its ability to sustain production and provide fossil energy that meets the growing needs of the global market.
A few days ago, Qatar Energy awarded a contract worth 2.21 billion Qatari riyals ($607 million) to the China Offshore Oil Engineering Corporation (COEC), to implement the second part of the fifth phase of the development of the “Idd al-Sharqi Oil Field – North Dome.”
Qatar Energy said, “The contract includes carrying out design, supply, construction and contracting work for the second part of the fifth phase of the development of the Idd al-Sharqi oil field for a period of 43 months.”
Qatar Energy aims to increase the production of the offshore Idd al-Sharqi field to an average of 61,000 barrels of oil per day and more than 37.2 million cubic feet of gas per day.
Qatar’s crude oil production currently amounts to approximately 600,000 barrels per day, and it exports about 520,000 barrels per day of it to Asian markets, while retaining about 80,000 barrels per day for local consumption.
The second phase of the development of the Idd al-Sharqi oil field comes less than 4 months after the start of the first phase of the expansion of the North Natural Gas Field, which would raise Qatar’s production of liquefied natural gas from 77 million tons to 126 million tons annually by 2027, as it seeks Doha aims to strengthen its position on the global energy throne.

Boosting oil production
Commenting on the Qatari step to develop the Al-Edd Al-Sharqi field, energy expert Shawqi Mahdi says that the Al-Eqd Al-Sharqi field is one of the most important Qatari oil fields, and its discovery dates back to the 1960s (Northern Dome), while the production of the Southern Dome began in 1999.
Mahdi explains in an interview with Al Jazeera Net that what is important in this announcement is that the Chinese Offshore Petroleum Engineering Company won the contract to develop the field, which reflects the remarkable development in the relationship with Chinese companies in light of the partnership between Qatar and China in its broad framework, pointing out that this announcement comes after a period One of the Chinese companies won to participate in the development of the North Field.
He points out that Qatar Energy is on its way to implementing its plans to develop the oil fields in the country to raise production and increase efficiency. This step was preceded by an important announcement made by Qatar Energy in 2019 to begin managing and operating the Idd al-Sharqi, North Dome, and Idd al-Sharqi, South Dome fields after the end of the development and participation agreements. Production between Qatar Energy and Occidental Limited, which continued for about 25 years (since October 1994).

The expert in energy affairs adds that during the transitional period in 2019, Qatar Energy conducted a complete review of the safety of oil-producing wells – including injection wells – and the necessary plans were drawn up for that, after which Qatar Energy announced bids for developing oil fields, including the Al-Idd Al-Sharqi field.
Mahdi confirms that the development of the Idd al-Sharqi field represents a step towards implementing the strategy of enhancing oil production and improving the performance of the Qatari energy sector, explaining that the development process contributes to maximizing the country’s imports from the oil sector and increases the production capacity of the State of Qatar as a major producer in the energy market.
It is expected that the coming period will witness more tenders for developing oil fields – such as Al-Shaheen Field – similar to the contracts for the third phase of developing Al-Shaheen Field within a project containing 4 main packages obtained by Larsen & Toubro to develop the giant Al-Shaheen Field, which currently produces about 300 thousand barrels per day as the largest and most complex offshore oil field in Qatar, which requires the use of high technology and the entry of companies with their weight in global energy markets.
Shawqi believes that all of these contracts embody an unconventional diversity of partners, which means that Qatar Energy wanted to benefit from various forms of technology in the world, starting with the United States, European countries, China, India, and others, to achieve the maximum benefit from hydrocarbon resources.

Global standing
For his part, expert in the field of oil and gas, Tariq Al-Sheikh, confirms that the process of developing the offshore Idd al-Sharqi oil field aims to increase the productivity of the field discovered in 1960 and the production process began in 1964, to raise productivity by about 61 thousand barrels of oil per day, indicating that the field will contribute about 10% of the country’s crude oil production.
The sheikh said in an interview with Al Jazeera Net that the field’s reserves of crude oil are estimated at about 1.2 billion barrels, while its reserves of associated gas amount to about 50 trillion cubic feet.
He believes that awarding the latest contract to the Chinese Offshore Oil Engineering Company (COEC) is a new and different step in Qatar’s international cooperation in the field of energy, as this is the first time that a Chinese company has entered into a partnership of this size with Qatar in the field of oil, which It reflects Qatar’s constant aspirations towards advanced technology.
Al-Sheikh confirms that the Idd al-Sharqi oil field is gaining increasing importance in energy production and has an economic value that contributes to Qatar’s national product. This step confirms Doha’s commitment to remain a leader in clean energy production and a source of sustainable development, and also strengthens Qatar’s position as a leading partner in the oil and gas industry at the global level. Global and reflects the country’s strategy to diversify energy sources and enhance environmental sustainability.

established case
In turn, academic and economic expert Dr. Abdul Rahim Al-Hoor says that in the same context of developing the pillars of the Qatari rentier economy, Doha worked to strengthen its position as a reliable and stable supplier in the field of energy, whether liquefied gas, petroleum, or oil derivatives.
Al-Hur adds to Al-Jazeera Net that to maintain this position, related projects were rolled out and investments in the field multiplied, whether directly or logistically related to the sector, and the development of the oil counting project comes within a deliberate and systematic context of developing the sector.
He also pointed out that the process of developing the field carries several implications, the first of which is cooperation with the Chinese company from the beginning of designs to supply, construction, installation and contracting, noting that more than 75% of Doha’s gas and energy production is directed to Asian markets, and thus comes joint cooperation between trade partners in The same field, and the other significance is working not only to stabilize and stabilize production, but also to enhance it in light of global demand fluctuations and price fluctuations.
Al-Hoor confirms that all these operations maintain Doha’s advanced position as a reliable energy producer, and thus contribute to strengthening its economic standing and credit rating and attracting international investment as a safe spot and a viable investment opportunity.
