Querétaro is committed to promoting the circular economy in manufacturing and construction

Queretaro, Qro. the system circular economy which since 2021 the state implements seeks to promote circularity in companies in the manufacturing and construction industries, sectors that together represent 40% of the local Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

At the moment, through this system in the state, it has been possible to reduce 15,000 tons of greenhouse gases at the state level, explained the Secretary of Sustainable Development (Sedesu), Marco Antonio del Prete Tercero, in the framework of the Mexico Business Summit.

In particular for the construction industry, he explained, standards are being generated that allow the reuse of waste, because the Law for the Prevention, Comprehensive Management and Circular Economy of Waste in the state of Querétaro requires the publication of a technical standard for waste management in this sector.

In this regard, the state secretary explained that one of the first effects of this initiative will be observed in the Paseo 5 de Febrero project, since the waste from roads and vehicular bridges that will be demolished can be used in other works of lesser fretwork

“We are going to see the first effects with the work on Avenida 5 de Febrero, the bridges, the beams of the bridges, which are being demolished at this moment, they are going to be used, the asphalt layer and the sand, the tepetate that has more after 30 years of being there, the asphalt layer will be used for other production processes that do not require much specification, they can be sidewalks, some type of surface”, he explained.

Only this year, in which Phase 1 of the system is implemented, 123 companies that have begun to implement circular economy models are considered. While in Phase zero, of 2021, 40 companies participated that undertook 50 projects, of which 80% are working and 64% are initiatives autofinanciables.

“In Querétaro we promote various policies for the circular economy. It is the first state to promote a circular economy system, it is based on the State Development Plan”, he explained.

Therefore, he referred that the bet is to move towards a circular economy, low in emissions, based on the reuse of inputs.

In this sense, he stated that the circular economy system is based on a roadmap that includes various points: the reuse of waste, the use of energy, water; The objective is for the anchor companies to promote this roadmap among their suppliers, generating a circular economy from the company itself.

As part of the system applied in the state, a group called Queretaro Circular, which is made up of civil and business organizations.

The state secretary referred that the main objective of the circular economy is the protection and care of the environment, however, it can also become a source of employment, because in France it currently provides 30,000 jobs and in the United States around 15,000 jobs. .

For this 2022, it is planned to implement 100 circular economy projects in Querétaro, estimating that by 2027 there will be 800 projects, with the projection of closing the state administration (2021-2027) with more than 1,000 initiatives.
