Raducanu and Osaka Soar Up Tennis Rankings

Following the conclusion of the US Open, the latest WTA rankings have seen significant shifts for several key players, including Emma Raducanu and Naomi Osaka.

Aryna Sabalenka solidified her position as world number one after a dominant victory over Amanda Anisimova in the final, securing the title in New York and maintaining a substantial lead over second-ranked Iga Swiatek. While Coco Gauff held her number three spot despite a quarter-final exit, runner-up Anisimova climbed five places to a new career-high of fourth.

Naomi Osaka was one of the biggest movers, surging 10 positions to 14th after an impressive run to the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows, which included victories over Daria Kasatkina, Gauff, and Karolina Muchova.

Emma Raducanu also continued her steady ascent, rising two places to 34th. Her performance, which included wins over Ena Shibahara and Janice Tjen before an elimination in the third round by Elena Rybakina, moves her closer to securing a coveted seeding for next year’s Australian Open. The British player has made a significant recovery in 2024, having started the year ranked 61st.

The most dramatic climb within the top 100 belonged to Cristina Bucsa, who jumped 33 spots to 62nd after reaching the round of 16.

Conversely, some players saw their rankings fall. Emma Navarro dropped seven places to 18th, Jessica Bouzas Maneiro fell 10 spots to 50th, and Donna Vekic slipped from 49th to 68th.

After her tournament exit, Raducanu offered a perspective on facing the sport’s elite, suggesting they elevate their performance when playing against her.

“When the very top play against me, they have a point to prove that they’re at the top and they’re there for a reason,” Raducanu said. “At the same time, while I’m improving, doing better, gaining maybe some more respect around, the top have definitely raised their game. But I’ll take that as a compliment that they’ve decided to really lock in against me. It does show I have a lot more work to do.”
