Saints can go top of the table with victory over Newcastle on Friday should they extend a run of four wins in their last five matches.

Hasenhuttl is refusing to dream of a possible title charge but he said: ‘It’s good when you are a little under the radar. I like it.’

Ralph Hasenhuttl says he hopes his Southampton ‘pirates’ remain under the radar this season

He added: ‘We like to be the pirate and it’s more fun than to join the Navy. It’s definitely something we can use every day and makes it fun to go and grab some points from the big teams.’

The unpredictable start to this season has prompted suggestions that an outsider could emulate Leicester in 2016 and launch an unlikely title tilt. ‘You never know,’ Hasenhuttl said.

But he is preaching caution. ‘The nice thing is that sometimes it happens but you don’t realistically think about us to be honest, you know where we have been and where we are coming from. It’s not possible for us,’ he said.

‘It’s a long season. This is why for me the Premier League title is higher rated than a Champions League title because you have to have the consistency for 12 months… you must show an unbelievable level to win this league.

Instead Hasenhuttl is still wary about the other end of the table.

‘We have played now seven games in a very long season – I have seen so many teams in the beginning of the season being top of the table and near the top, and then relegated,’ he added.

‘We know, things can change so quick – a few injuries or something like that can change everything so quick.’
