As the Los Angeles Rams (6-2) prepare for a critical NFC showdown against the San Francisco 49ers (6-3), the Super Bowl contender is grappling with a significant weakness in its special teams.
The team’s kicking operation, led by Joshua Karty, has been one of the least effective in the NFL and has been consistently plagued by blocked kicks. After eight games, Head Coach Sean McVay’s patience appears to have run out.
“It can’t continue like this; it’s gone on far too long,” McVay stated this week, signaling that a change is imminent.
In response, the Rams have signed kicker Harrison Mevis to their practice squad. Mevis is a 23-year-old rookie from Missouri with no regular-season NFL experience. The 5-foot-11, 243-pound specialist is known by the nickname “The Thiccer Kicker.” The team also added veteran long-snapper Jake McQuaide.
These moves strongly suggest that Karty’s position as the primary kicker is in jeopardy ahead of the crucial divisional matchup.
