In a Turkish initiative to turn the page on the dispute with the Gulf Cooperation Council after signing the declaration of reconciliation between Qatar and the countries of the Arab Quartet
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that his country is seeking to restore its position in Gulf cooperation.
The Turkish president’s statements coincided with the announcement by the UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash that his country does not cherish any hostility with Ankara, which he considered a key economic partner in the Middle East region, adding that the dispute regarding Abu Dhabi is based on Ankara’s view of its strategic role in the region.
For its part, Riyadh, despite positive signals exchanged with Ankara since the G20 summit, however, Greek media reports speak of Riyadh’s intention to send F-15 planes to the Souda military base on the Greek island of Crete, causing concern in Turkey.
What is the fate of the Turkish move? Will Ankara reconsider its role in the region to zero in its regional differences?
