The total foreign-born population living in the US, either legally or irregularly, reached 47 million in April 2022, revealed the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS).
According to the research organization, the figure is “a record in United States history” and is the highest percentage in the last 112 years.
The data, according to CIS, is part of an analysis of the US Census Bureau’s monthly Current Population Survey (CPS) and includes all people who are not US citizens at birth.
According to the organization, the CPS took into account for its investigation “the size and growth of the population born abroad” and with the data they collected they determined that one in seven people living in the United States is a foreigner, which represents 14.3% of the country’s population,
He further explained that while much of the recent increase is due to “illegal immigration, those in the country legally still account for three-quarters of all foreign-born residents.”
