Recovery before rematch against Bivol

Canelo Álvarez needs to be out of the ring for up to a year when it is confirmed that he will undergo surgery on his left hand. The super middleweight world champion confessed that the injury was sustained before his trilogy fight with Gennady Golovkin and dates back to his clash with Caleb Plant last year.

“I started feeling really bad, I need surgery. It was really bad, really bad. It’s not torn, it’s a meniscus, it’s a wrist injury, it’s not torn. It’s ligaments, like a knee injury or something. I I’m going to take the time my body needs. Last year I fought four times in 11 months, that’s why. But I need to take a little time, maybe May, September I need to take my time.”

Four years after their most recent meeting ended in a close and disputed victory for Álvarez (58-2-2, 39 KOs), the four-division world champion left little doubt about this verdict. The 32-year-old Mexican star thoroughly clobbered Golovkin (42-2-1), now 40, in the first eight rounds. The judges scored Alvarez close: 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113, largely due to a late and spirited comeback from Golovkin.

He’s a tough fighter, but I’m glad I won,” Canelo said in his post-fight interview.

The first fight of the trilogy was played on September 16, 2017 and was a draw. The cards were 118-110, 113-115 and 114-114. In the second fight, on September 15, 2018, Canelo won by majority decision (114-114, 115-113 and 115-113).

“Everyone knows that this is a high-level fight, the best for boxing. Look at his face. Look at my face. It is of a high level, because we trained well, and that shows that we made a very good fight, of very good quality.” GGG said he fought at 168 pounds for the first time in his career.
