Although August is an unconventional time to be seeking a new team, Louis Rees-Zammit’s exceptional abilities and high profile mean numerous clubs will be keen to find space in their budgets for him.
His eligibility for Test selection is secure, as his 32 caps allow him to play outside of Wales and still represent the national team under Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) policy.
“He’s still so young,” former Wales scrum-half Richie Rees told BBC Radio Wales. “He is explosive and his repeated speed, his lateral movement, is one of the best in the business and that’s why he went on the British and Irish Lions tour last time.”
Financially, the most lucrative destinations are in Japan and France, and he was previously linked to several Top 14 clubs before his move to American football. A return to England with Gloucester, where he first made his name with dazzling displays at Kingsholm, appears a strong fit on the field but would face salary cap constraints.
Alternatively, an emerging project at Newcastle could be appealing, with recent news of a potential Red Bull investment perhaps positioning the Falcons to pursue a marquee player. Another long-term option is R360, a proposed breakaway franchise league aiming to attract superstars for a potential first season in late 2026. However, with questions remaining about the ambitious competition and Rees-Zammit likely eager for action after his time in the NFL, he will have no shortage of immediate suitors.
