Reform to extend vacations passes the second process in the Senate

The Legislative Studies Commission, Second approved the reform so that workers who have more than one year of service can enjoy an annual paid vacation period, which in no case is less than 12 working days. Now it will be time to present the proposal to a vote in the full Senate.

It should be noted that the project proposes that this vacation period increases by two working days, up to 20, for each subsequent year of service, and that, from the sixth year of seniority, it increases by two days for every five of services.

In addition, it would be established that workers must continuously enjoy at least 12 days of vacation.

It should be remembered that on September 27, the Labor and Social Welfare Commission, chaired by Senator Napoleon Gomez Urrutiaapproved this bill on decent vacations presented by Senator Patricia Mercado.

Now it was up to the Legislative Studies Commission, Second, to approve the proposals. The legislators agreed that this proposal has a sense of labor justice and fulfills the right that all people have to rest and free time; It also takes into account that in Mexico the workforce registers around 2,255 annual hours of service.

Senator Espino de la Peña said that this is one of the pending reforms for the benefit of the country’s workers, because “the right to vacations and recreation raises productivity and makes us more competitive.”

He stressed that among the advances in labor matters of the current government, is the increase in purchasing power and the elimination of outsourcing, but vacations were a pending issue in order to strengthen the national workforce.
