House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has threatened to impeach Trump for a second time, unless he submits his resignation “immediately”, a move that is unlikely to be taken by a president whose behavior is challenging and confrontational.
Democratic members of the House of Representatives deliberated formal charges that could lead to impeachment of President Trump. Pelosi also asked members to prepare draft legislation aimed at activating the 25th amendment to the US Constitution that allows the president to be removed from office, if he becomes unable to carry out his official duties.
Pelosi said Trump had “committed a very serious matter that warrants prosecution.”
The intense effort to oust Trump from the White House had support from some of his fellow Republicans as well.
To activate the 25th constitutional amendment, Vice President Mike Pence, and a majority of Trump’s government, must declare him incapable of performing the duties of the presidency.
