The British newspaper, The Independent, revealed a plan to transfer thousands of asylum seekers whom it described as “vulnerable” from hotels to “squalid housing” without offering them any financial support.
Charities and asylum seekers say that young children and pregnant women are notified only a few hours before they are “transported” around the country, are left in “dirty, damp, musty homes” and are forced to wait for weeks to start receiving their weekly government benefits.
Last month, the Ministry of Interior began a process to expedite the transfer of 9,500 asylum seekers staying in hotels to other accommodation, and so far, about 2,500 people have been transferred.
Charities described this process as “shameful”, warning that the companies that the Ministry of the Interior had contracted with to manage the asylum dormitories move people from a “horrific situation to another”, and that people are sometimes transferred several times within weeks without a coronavirus test for them, which leads Public health risks.
Asylum seekers spoke to the newspaper about problems such as moving them from one place to another within short periods, which affects their studies and activities, and charities reported that there is a delay in giving the weekly allowance of about 40 pounds per person (55 US dollars), which leaves them without money, and pays them. Towards food banks.
