Addis Ababa- opened Al Jazeera Center for Studiesin cooperation with the Institute of Foreign Affairs in EthiopiaA research conference, today in the capital Addis AbabaUnder the title “Africa… Challenges of Fragility and Opportunities to Benefit from International Competition,” with the participation of an elite group of researchers and experts specialized in African affairs.
The conference, which lasts for two days, discusses a number of chronic and urgent internal challenges facing the countries of the continent, especially international competition over their resources and wealth, and searches for the most effective ways to confront them and reduce their risks and repercussions. It also talks about the continent’s regional security and the crises it suffers from, such as border crises. The burden of debt, terrorism and piracy, and threats to the environment and health systems.
The conference also addresses issues related to looking at Africa within the context of the society surrounding it, such as the impact of globalization on it, cross-border wars, and technological infrastructure. On the other hand, it talks about the actors in it, including armies, political institutions, and African and regional organizations, adding to this a comparison between the calm of the Global South and the combustion of Africa. North, presenting some of the successful experiences of southern African countries.
The importance of cooperation
At the opening ceremony of the conference, Director of the Research Department at Al Jazeera Center for Studies, Ezz El-Din Abdel Mawla, stressed the importance of cooperation between research institutions and the thought industry in Africa, noting that institutional cooperation enables institutions to overcome financial and regulatory obstacles, and contributes to developing ideas and exchanging experiences.
He drew attention to the major challenges facing the African continent, which, in his opinion, require cooperation between various institutions, to reach African visions that contribute to the development of the continent and confront international conflicts over its resources.
Space for dialogue
For his part, the Executive Director of the Institute of Foreign Affairs in Ethiopia, Jaafar Badro, pointed out the importance of this partnership in creating a space for constructive dialogue on the political, economic and security issues facing the African continent, noting that “the escalation of competition between global powers has led to what is known as the era of multiple crises, which It has increased the complexity of the situation on the continent,” and the interventionist himself stressed the importance of thinking about new ways to protect Africa’s interests in light of this increasing international competition.
The representative of the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Rita Alemu, also called for strengthening cooperation between the African continent and the countries of the Middle East, with the aim of achieving sustainable development and common prosperity, stressing the importance of unifying efforts to confront the common challenges facing the two continents, such as conflicts, poverty and climate change.
He stressed that Africa has tremendous potential for growth, and that it needs strategic partnerships with Middle Eastern countries to diversify its economies and build advanced infrastructure.
