Reuters reported that UN Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Mark Lowcock will call on the United States to reverse its decision to designate the Yemeni “Ansar Allah” group as a terrorist organization.
Reuters said it had seen the text of Lowcock’s intervention before the UN Security Council scheduled for Thursday, January 14th.
According to “Reuters”, Lowcock will warn that the US decision may lead to “famine on a scale unprecedented for nearly 40 years” in Yemen.
Lowcock is also expected to say that the US plan to issue sanctions waivers to humanitarian agencies will not allow starvation to be avoided in Yemen.
On Sunday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Washington’s intention to designate the “Ansar Allah” Houthi group “a foreign terrorist organization.”
