Preliminary results of the legislative elections in the Netherlands showed the victory of the far-right, anti-Islam Freedom Party, led by… Geert Wilders.
According to preliminary results, the far-right party led by Wilders won 35 seats out of 150 seats comprising the lower chamber of the Dutch Parliament. Thus, the Freedom Party becomes the first far-right party to win parliamentary elections in the Netherlands.
This share represents a significant weight in the Dutch House of Representatives, which includes many dispersed forces.
An opinion poll conducted by the Ipsos Institute showed that the Alliance of Left and Environmentalists, led by Frans Timmermans, won 25 seats, thus placing it in second place in the legislative elections. While the center-right party came in third place, winning 24 seats, according to the poll.
There are expectations that talks to form a government coalition will take a long time and be beset by some difficulties.
Wilders said in a speech to his supporters following the release of the preliminary results of the elections that took place yesterday, Wednesday, “It is no longer possible to ignore the results and we will govern the country.”
He called on other parties to search for commonalities with his party and to work together, and said that otherwise would be contrary to democracy.
The Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth published a video clip showing Wilders celebrating the preliminary results showing his party topping the election results, with the Israeli flag behind him.
Wilders, a member of the Dutch House of Representatives and a far-right politician, is known for his anti-Arab, anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant stances. Video clips were published of him mocking what he said was the increase of Muslims in the Netherlands, as he said that watching them perform prayers on the streets of the Netherlands threatens to strip the Netherlands of its identity.
