The Syrian Network for Human Rights reported that Syrian regime forces in the city of Latakia “arbitrarily” arrested two specialist doctors and the cousin of one of them, all of whom are members of the Alawite sect, due to their criticism of the regime.
According to the network, the detainees were detained without any judicial warrant, “in a process of marginalization and complete absence of judicial authority, and without enabling the detainees to communicate with their families or lawyers, or to know the charges against them.”
The arrests included Dr. Zuhair Ibrahim Khair Bek, a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology, and his cousin, Iyad Suhail Khair Bek, a car parts dealer. They were arrested while heading from the city of Latakia to the town of Kasab in the countryside of Latakia Governorate, and were taken to the Military Security Branch in the city of Latakia.
The network also recorded the regime forces’ arrest of Dr. Ahmed Mazhar Al-Sufi, a specialist in pediatrics and plastic surgery, and the owner of Al-Sufi Hospital in the city of Latakia. He is 80 years old.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights says that doctors Zuhair Khair Bek and Ahmed Mazhar Al-Sufi are well-known figures in the city of Latakia, and are known for their continuous criticism of the Syrian regime’s security and economic policies.
The network expressed its fear that the three detainees were subjected to torture and enforced disappearance, which it said was a “common practice” in Syria.
