The conservative currents are full of fanaticism, repression and hatred towards that different world that goes out of its guidelines. Watch over life, yes, but only when your interests are not in danger. Despite the fact that the systems of organization of the States are opposite in the United States and in Spain, the decision of the Supreme Court to repeal the right to abortion reflects how the interruption of pregnancy and the rest of the rights that we believe consolidated can be revoked at a stroke of the pen. The defense of women’s rights is a generational struggle. They are reinforced and respected in the streets, taking action and voting at the polls. Let us not forget.

Love messages
Near my house there is a bench with a small handwritten sign that says: “I miss you, Carmencita. I do not have anyone to talk to.” It has been carefully glued and has been enduring sun and rain for months. I see it every time I take the dog for a walk and try to imagine the story behind it. The other day I discussed it with someone who also passes by there often. He had not been aware of its existence. I am a chronic pessimist and I suspect that Carmencita is dead but, if not, I only hope that she is, like me, one of those who do read the messages on the park benches.

Euthanasia
In line with the text published by this newspaper by the doctor Jesús Medina, after performing euthanasia in 2021, I would like to underpin his action with the words of the writer John Berger. Berger says that we do not mourn death; we mourn the loss of hope, which is where vital commitment dwells. Once hope is lost, all hope, and Berger is not referring to the hope of staying alive —he is referring, as I interpret it, to the hope of living, it is not the same thing—, once lost, the hour of death arrives. dignity.

the grand bazaar
The umpteenth tragedy of African migration to Europe leaves us with death and people treated worse than cattle, crowded together like dead bodies without dignity. And what does Spain do in the face of this? With one hand, she raises the Declaration of Human Rights and blames the mafias that make the flight from misery profitable. With the other, she pats Morocco on the back for guaranteeing us peace of mind at the border at all costs. The mafias are not the only ones that traffic in human rights. Our politicians grope and trade them at will, lowering them to the category of rhetorical wild cards.

Ignorance
I read with astonishment that the student who has obtained the highest grade in the EvAU test in the Community of Madrid has been ridiculed on the networks for choosing Classical Philology as a career. What would become of our world devoted to new technologies without those careers in the humanities! “There is only one way to avoid criticism: do nothing, say nothing, and be nothing.” Oh if Aristotle raised his head!
