(Trends Wide) — Robert Durst, the eccentric millionaire who wowed audiences in HBO’s documentary series “The Jinx” before being convicted of murder last year, has died in a California jail hospital, his longtime attorney Dick DeGuerin told Paul Trends Wide’s Vercammen. He was 78 years old.
Durst, who was at the California Health Care Center in Stockton, died of natural causes at 6:44 a.m. Monday. This was reported by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The San Joaquin County Coroner will determine the exact cause of death.
Durst was charged with murder in New York last November in connection with the 1982 disappearance of his wife Kathleen McCormack Durst. His body was never found.
Just two months before the indictment, he was convicted of the 2000 murder of his close friend Susan Berman, shortly before she spoke to police about Kathleen’s disappearance.
Serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole, Durst had been treated in Stockton since being diagnosed with COVID-19 in October. The real estate heir was also suffering from a multitude of other illnesses, including bladder cancer.
