The Colorado Rockies released left-handed pitcher Austin Gomber on Friday, parting ways with a key player acquired in the 2021 trade that sent third baseman Nolan Arenado to the St. Louis Cardinals.
The move follows a difficult season for Gomber, who was 0-7 with a 7.49 ERA over 12 starts for the last-place Rockies. His last win came on September 5, 2024.
Gomber was the centerpiece of the five-player package Colorado received when it dealt a disgruntled Arenado to St. Louis. The Rockies also paid a significant portion of the Gold Glove winner’s contract in the trade.
In his time with Colorado, Gomber posted a 28-44 record with a 5.31 ERA in 125 appearances. He was originally a fourth-round draft pick by the Cardinals in 2014.
To fill the roster spot, the Rockies selected the contract of left-hander Lucas Gilbreath from Triple-A Albuquerque and recalled right-hander Angel Chivilli. The team also placed right-hander Dugan Darnell on the 15-day injured list with left hip inflammation.
