Rockstar Games has set immense expectations for Grand Theft Auto 6, referring to the highly anticipated title as “the largest game launch in history” in a recent job advertisement.
The bold claim appeared in a listing for a lead software engineer on the company’s website. The position is tasked with ensuring the game’s data platform can scale to provide “an exceptional experience for millions of players worldwide,” supporting both GTA 6 and the continued growth of Grand Theft Auto Online.
While the paragraph containing the “largest game launch” statement was later removed from the live posting, its initial inclusion was verified through archived versions of the page.
It is unclear whether Rockstar’s definition of “largest” refers to player count or revenue. Industry analysts project the game will have a significant financial impact, with one firm estimating it could be worth $2.7 billion.
Scheduled to launch in the fall of 2025, GTA 6 marks the first new entry in the series in over a decade. The previous installment, Grand Theft Auto 5, was released in 2013, creating substantial demand for a successor. While a recent trailer introduced the game’s dual protagonists, Jason and Lucia, many details remain under wraps. Rockstar has yet to share information on the next iteration of GTA Online or confirm if it will launch simultaneously with the main campaign.
The game’s release is already influencing the broader industry, with other developers planning their schedules around it. Nate Fox, director at Sucker Punch, joked that his studio celebrated when GTA 6 was delayed out of 2024, giving their own title a clearer launch window.
Regarding the release schedule, Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two, previously stated that “historically when we set a specific date, generally speaking, we’ve been very good about reaching it.”
