The organizers of the Doha Tennis Championship announced today, Tuesday, that Romanian Simona Halep, ranked third in the world, has withdrawn from the tournament scheduled between the first and sixth of next March.
The organizers quoted on the official website of the tournament in “Instagram” a statement by the 29-year-old Romanian star, saying: “Unfortunately, I decided to withdraw … I am impatient to return next year to Doha.”
Halep, who was eliminated from the quarter-finals of the Australian Open at the hands of American Serena Williams, after her exit from the same round in the Australian Gibsland preparatory tournament for the first Grand Slam tournament, did not explain the reasons for her withdrawal from the tournament for the second time in a row, after the first one last year.
It is noteworthy that Halep was crowned champion of the Doha Championship in 2014 at the expense of German Angelik Kerber, and lost the 2019 final at the hands of Belgian Elise Mertens.
