The Minnesota Twins have claimed right-handed reliever Brooks Kriske off waivers from the Chicago Cubs. Kriske, 31, was designated for assignment by Chicago on Saturday after pitching six scoreless innings with four strikeouts in four relief appearances. The journeyman has also played for the New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles, and Kansas City Royals.
To create space for Kriske on the 40-man roster, the Twins designated reliever Darren McCaughan for assignment. McCaughan was recalled from Triple-A St. Paul on Monday but did not appear in a game. Kriske is expected to join the team on Wednesday.
In a separate bullpen move, reliever Noah Davis was optioned to St. Paul after allowing three runs in one inning during Monday’s loss to Detroit.
In news involving a former player, the Boston Red Sox designated reliever Jorge Alcala for assignment on Tuesday. Alcala had a 3.31 ERA in 19 appearances for Boston. The Twins traded him in June for High-A infielder Andy Lugo, who is batting .309 with three home runs and 11 RBI in 28 games since joining the organization.
