Rosca de Reyes more expensive due to inflation

Inflation closes the Guadalupe-Reyes bridge with a flourish, the celebration of Three Kings Day that marks the end of the Christmas season and what it entails to share the traditional Rosca de Reyes accompanied by a delicious cup of chocolate will be more expensive than the last year.

The National Alliance of Small Merchants (Anpec) warned that this year some Mexican families will have to spend the night celebrating January 6, due to the fact that inflation was present in bakery, dairy and chocolate products, causing an average increase in up to 33 percent.

According to the price monitoring carried out by Anpec, the average cost of a small bagel, without filling, in 2022 was sold at 120 pesos, while for this year an average cost of 184.50 pesos is expected, that is registered an increase equivalent to 53.75 percent.

On the other hand, a large Rosca de Reyes, without filling, reflects an increase of 75 pesos, since in 2022 340 pesos were sold, on average, while for this year it is expected to cost 415 pesos.

It is not only about the Rosca de Reyes, some elements to accompany the celebration such as milk and chocolate also reflected an increase in prices, according to data from the study prepared by Anpec, making a hot drink for 10 people reflects an increase in cost per above 40 percent.

However, the increase in prices of products such as baking and dairy products is not new for Mexican families, according to data from the México Cómo Vamos portal, these items reflected annual price variations of 19.5 and 13.9% respectively, positioning themselves within merchandise What did inflation feel more strongly in 2022.

Eat like a King, without breaking the bank

Although pockets will resent the increase in the price of the star of the table on Three Kings Day, there are keys to adjusting the celebration to any budget.

Start by prioritizing the type of elements you are looking for in the traditional Rosca de Reyes, within the shops and bakeries there will be different products whose price varies depending on the complexity and ingredients found inside the famous bread.

For example, a medium bagel without filling, on average, has a cost of 286 pesos, while a bagel of the same size with some type of filling has an average price of 328 pesos, so adding some kind of filling such as whipped cream or chocolate could increase its value by more than 70 pesos.

Another option to cushion the price increase on the night of January 6 is to compare the prices of the supermarkets against the franchise bakeries, since the prices between each store vary.

According to data from Anpec, a medium bagel without filling has an average cost of 357 pesos, in supermarkets, while in a franchise bakery it maintains a cost of 280 pesos.

Before buying this bread, it is advisable to check the approximate number of people for which each of the sizes of the different bagels is intended, this will help ensure that you buy a fair amount and prevent too much or too little bread.

Another option to help our budget and not spend too much is to choose to buy within the locality, traditional bakeries regularly have lower prices compared to supermarkets or franchises, so this could help lessen the blow of the inflation while supporting the local economy.
