Roslyn becomes a category 4 hurricane as it moves toward the Pacific coast of Mexico

The hurricane Roslyn intensified on Saturday category 4 and is expected to continue to strengthen as it moves toward tourist areas along Mexico’s Pacific coast and makes landfall on Sunday, said the National Hurricane Center (NHC) from the United States.

Roslyn is forecast to gain strength as it moves parallel to the southwestern coast of Mexico before making landfall along the coast of the state of Nayarit on Sunday morning, bringing high winds and a large storm surge, the agency said.

Nayarit is home to popular beach destinations like Sayulita and Punta Mita.

Although weakening was possible as of Saturday night, Roslyn was still expected to be near or at major hurricane strength when it made landfall, the Miami-based center said.

Maximum sustained winds were near 215 kilometers per hour, and intense rains in the upper coast of Colima, Jalisco and western Nayarit.

Heavy rains could lead to flash flooding and possible landslides in areas of rugged terrain on the southwest and west-central coast of Mexico,” it said.

Preparations to protect life and property “must be completed quickly” for the hurricane warning areas along the Jalisco and Nayarit coasts from Playa Perula to El Roblito, it added.
