The Russian Ministry of Defense announced a prisoner exchange operation between Armenia and Azerbaijan, mediated personally by the commander of the Russian peacekeepers in the Karabakh region, Lieutenant General Rustam Muradov.
The Russian defense spokesman, Major General Igor Konashenkov, said, according to the “Russia Today” satellite channel, that the commander of the Russian peacekeepers had, during the last two weeks, intensive negotiations with the Armenian and Azerbaijani sides regarding the exchange of prisoners.
The exchange took place this evening, when 12 prisoners were handed over to the Azerbaijani side and 44 to the Armenian side.
Konashenkov stressed that Russian peacekeepers continue to provide assistance in efforts to collect information on missing persons during the conflict in Karabakh.
The return of the displaced to their homes also continues, as 825 displaced Armenians returned to Karabakh during the last day, bringing the total number of returnees since the start of the peacekeeping operation to more than 39,000 people.
